The Cher Show, a Collection of Work by Hugh Busby
11-19-2008
"The Cher Show" is a collection of digital photographs taken by Hugh Busby. When traveling across the U.S. and abroad, the "Cher doll" was one of Busby’s companions, posing for the usual and sometimes unusual sight-seeing shots in front of monuments, such as the Coliseum in Rome, the ruins in Pompeii, Statute of Liberty, the Lorraine Motel, other sites in the Memphis Area, and other architecturally appealing sites.
Hugh Busby was born in Picayune, Mississippi and received his degree in journalism from the University of Southern Mississippi. He moved to Memphis in 1989 and earned his MFA degree with a concentration in Graphic Design in 2004. This is Busby's first solo show. His work has previously been shown in his MFA Thesis Exhibition (2004), In Group shows such as: The University of Memphis, Department of Art Faculty Show (2005), Playhouse on the Square Art & Auctions (2005 & 2008), Distinguished Alumni Awards Art Exhibition & Sale (2008) as well as various Juried Student Exhibitions.

The Dixon's Art After Dark: The President's Analyst
11-18-2008
Dr. Sidney Schaefer (James Coburn) finds that being psychoanalyst to the president of the United States has made him a target of sinister (if bumbling) American and foreign spies. The cold war meets flower power in this funny, farcical romp.
To represent the 1960s, Director Kevin Sharp has selected movies that anticipate, revel in, and reflect the period's counter-culture impulses. There is no mistaking that thse films were made in the 1960s. There will be a short introduction before screening.
Thursday, November 20: The President's Analyst, 1967 Starring: James Coburn, Godfrey Cambridge, and Will Geer Directed by: Theodore J. Flicker
The Dixon Gallery and Gardens Galleries open until 8:00. Film starts at 7:00. 103 minutes Free with museum admission.

This new project includes shades of Kate's entire musical history -- running the gamut from R&B and pop rhythms to gospel, country and folk sounds.

Come by the Metal Museum tomorrow, November 15th from 5 - 8 pm to see 2000 pounds of molten metal transformed into works of art, live on the Museum grounds.
In conjunction with the opening of our new exhibition, Contemporary Cast Iron II, the artists of the Society for the Preservation of Humanity will be here to conduct an iron pour and perform with assorted "art machines" of their own creation.
The process of pouring iron is a frenzied but well-orchestrated choreography. Positioned on opposite ends of the pouring zone, two copulas will be fed refined coal, iron, and atmospheric air. With the introduction of fire, this mixture will produce 120 pounds of molten iron at 3000 degrees Fahrenheit every 10 to 15 minutes. A team of artists will then tap each cupola and, using a two-person ladle, pour the metal into awaiting molds. After the molds are poured they will be broken open to reveal new works of art.
The Iron Pour and exhibition opening are free for Museum members and $20 for nonmembers. Click here for more information.
Contemporary Cast Iron II is generously sponsored by the Lawler Foundry Corporation.

Jed Jackson: Toujours L' Audace at the Dixon
11-13-2008
Born in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Jed Jackson has become one of the more intriguing artists working in the Mid-south today. Since receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Memphis College of Art and Master of Fine Arts degree from Cornell University, Jackson has been awarded numerous grants and fellowships to work and teach across the country and in Europe. He is currently professor of painting at the University of Memphis, where he serves as Chair of the Department of Art. Since the mid-1980's, Jackson's paintings have been exhibited in major solo shows in New York, Chicago, and St. Louis, among many other cities, and in international group shows in London, Amsterdam, Basel, and Montreal.
Jackson's quirky genre paintings come out of a long tradition of social satire in art, and are infused with a wide array of influences , including Medieval panel painting, Dutch Baroque imagery, Hogarth's social commentary, German expressionism, American scene painting, and twentieth-century propaganda posters. Employing human representations to refer to history, politics, and culture, Jackson sarically compares the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s to the extravagance of the belle epoque of the 1880s, 1890s and early 1900s. With engaging subjects, scathing humor, and eye-catching color, Toujours L' Audace presents Jackson's painted realities aimed at stimulating thought and discussion on how we live and the choices we make.

Okay, it's not so secret, it's called "The Conversion" and follows the downfall and post-apocalyptic world after the digital TV conversion on February 17th, 2009 goes horribly awry.
These "webisodes" will hit the internets from December 08 to February 09. We pay in fun, good times and tasty snack foods. Most roles will take a day. We need all makes and models but here's a few lead roles we need:
White Male 30's: Best described as Ryan Seacrest(ish)...
African-American Male 50's, 60's with a deep, soulful, radio DJ voice.
Female, any race, late teens to early 20's. A lonelygirl15 type gal.
Contact us at corduroywednesday@gmail.com with resumes, pics, availability, likes, dislikes, and just to let us know how you're doing today.
We'll also get a few things posted up on our website: www.cwfilms.net & www.myspace.com/corduroywednesday

Platinum-selling soul singer Maxwell will be performing his hits like "Fortunate," "Get To Know Ya," and "Lifetime" on the Orpheum stage.
Maxwell began working with songwriter Leon Ware and noted guitarist Wah Wah Watson to record his debut Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite in the early 1990s. When the album was finished, Columbia had doubts about the album's potential, and shelved it for two years, but finally issued it in 1996. Heavily inspired by the sound of classic soul music, Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite did not catch on with audiences until the release of its second single, "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)", which became a hit. Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite sold over 500,000 copies, earning gold status, and was nominated for a Grammy Award.

Following the success of their No. 1 album, Long Road Out of Eden, the Eagles will perform live at FedEx Forum on Sunday, November 16.
The band - Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit - will be performing current hits from Long Road Out of Eden including “How Long" and "Busy Being Fabulous" as well as their classic songs.
Part of the broad appeal of the Eagles has been their plasticity; they easily cast a soft rock vibe but upon further inspection the music may contort into aggressive blues with a near-psychedelic undercurrent. Their "On the Border" and "One of these Nights" phases led into the pinnacle of what was to become their monument to the western life; Hotel California. This song (and, by extension, album) is among the most-played in American radio history, and you are hard-pushed to find someone who doesn't enjoy listening to it. 16 million copies of Hotel Calfornia have been sold in the US. Many people say that you must see the eagles perform their anthem live at least once. The sheer demand and value placed on the Eagles tickets is likely due in part to this fact.
For The Eagles tickets, Memphis seats will definitely be highly sought after. Get your Memphis concert tickets now and have the time of your life!
Enjoy a salsa lesson with La Rumba Latin Dance Company, the official dancers of Rumba Room, followed by a professional demonstration and more dancing! Church Health Center documentary to debut at GPAC Nov. 18
11-10-2008
Film chronicles Center's efforts to serve growing number of working uninsured
The debut screening of Getwell, a documentary about the Church Health Center, is set for 7 p.m. Nov. 18 at Germantown Performing Arts Centre (GPAC). The film, which will run from 7 to 8:15 p.m. with a reception to follow, is free and open to the public.
Shot over the last three years, the film takes an unflinching look at the uninsured crisis in America and the Center’s ongoing mission to provide quality, affordable healthcare to working uninsured people and their families. Filmmakers Patrick Sheehan and Gannon Weaver co-directed the film and produced it for their production company, Eyeline Films.
"We believe in the mission of the Church Health Center, and we wanted to tell the stories of great healing taking place in Memphis and beyond," said Weaver, who also works for the Center. "For Patrick and me, making this movie was a labor of love."
The film begins with the cuts to the state's TennCare program in 2005, which trimmed 171,000 people statewide and dramatically increased the Center's patient load. Several people affected by the cuts are featured in the film. The film also tells the story of Rosie Murrell, one of many people who has lost weight and learned to live a healthier life at Hope & Healing, the Center’s wellness ministry.
Much of the film is dedicated to telling the story of the Center's founding, with key interviews with CHC founder Dr. Scott Morris and those who influenced him. The film goes on to show how the Center has grown to become the largest faith-based Center of its type in the country, with replicated clinics sprouting up across the nation.
Others featured in the film include Mrs. Fields Cookies founder Debbie Fields, Saks 5th Avenue CEO Brad Martin, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Mike Leavitt, then State Commissioner of Health Dr. Kenneth Robinson, Temple Israel's Rabbi Micah Greenstein and many other faith leaders involved with the Center.
"Getwell is the result of three years of hard work by two young men who have given their enormous talent, time and energy to tell our story through film," Dr. Morris said. "It's a remarkable work, and I hope many will take the opportunity to join us for this premier."
To view clips from the film, visit www.eyelinefilms.org. For information about the Church Health Center, call (901) 272-7170.

MUSIC
This Week at Otherlands!
11-06-2008
Friday, November 7: Shabbadoo, The Nautilus, Star & Micey
SHABBADOO Some of the smartest, mellowest, most bittersweet pop to come out of Memphis, blending melancholy keyboard soundscapes, fuzzy electric guitars, and sharp, introspective lyrics. Shabbadoo offers a gently psychedelic tonic custom-made for rainy days or long drunken nights that accidentally spill over into morning.
ChrisDavis of the Memphis Flyer writes: "Shabadoo started out as a one-man band fronted, backed, and centered by Joey Pegram, who made his Memphis debut as the drummer for hippie-punks 611. Pegram also drummed for the Bumnotes, Professor Elixir's Southern Troubadours, and short-lived noise-punks Apocalax. He was a guitar slinger and co-vocalist for the Joint Chiefs until they stripped down to a power trio, and he still plays drums and sings backup for 2 Way Radio. But none of the boisterous music Pegram has made in public compares to the simple and simply wonderful collections of tunes he crafted in private and gave away to friends as Christmas presents. In 2004, Pegram finally drug Shabadoo out of the soft-rock closet."
THE NAUTILUS The Nautilus is a 4 piece rock/indie/psychedelic group that focuses on original material, intense live performances, and progressive improvisation. The Nautilus has been keeping busy gigging around the mid south in preparation for a lengthy national tour in support of the new album. They are Ryan Proctor, vocals and guitar, Jon Barnett, bass and vocals, JD Reager Drums and vocals, and Bob Massey, guitar.
STAR & MICEY Are an indie rock band from Memphis, Tennessee. They spend a lot of time in the studio, knocking out crafty pop tunes that you should really check out. Star and Micey are JOSHUA COSBY - Guitars, Lead Vocals, JERRY MEADOWS - Drums, Percussion GEOFF SMITH - Bass, Vocals.
Saturday, November 8: Rob Jungklas Trio, Men of Distinction, Roy Brewer
ROB JUNGKLAS TRIO The Rob Jungklas Trio is Rob Jungklas on guitars and vocals, Jonathon Kirkscey, cello, and Robert Barnett, drums. Folk music verging on heavy metal. Blues with the sensibilities of techno industrial. This trio is putting up some of the best work in a decade from any Memphis band, signed or unsigned. Rob is fresh out of Ardent Studio, and playing songs from his most ambitious recordings to date.
The Rob Jungklas Trio is rounded out by the bitchin' chops and ample "scene cred" of Robert Barnett (Big Ass Truck, MouseRocket) on drums, and Jonathon Kirkscey (Harlan T. Bobo, MouseRocket) playing cello. Together they create the Gothic, folk/rock, delta blues mayhem they describe as "Terror, longing, and supplication in weird open tunings," while listing their only influences as “Night sweats and the 14 stations of the cross."
MEN OF DISTINCTION Second generation Memphis musician Eva Brewer fronts this combo from behind the drum kit and occasionally plays guitars, accompanied by Nick Gamer on guitars and vocals, and sometimes Roy Brewer on several instruments.
At the tender age of 21, Eva Brewer has already built up a resume in the Memphis music business, working as a sound and lighting technician, and union stage hand. The performance bug has bitten her and her combo Men of Distinction have been making a stir at various open mic and coffee house shows.
ROY BREWER Playing in every kind of ensemble from Cat Power to the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, multi-instrumentalist Roy Brewer is a multiple nominee in the city's Premier Player (Grammy) Awards.
He will be playing a set of hill country and delta blues on acoustic guitar for this show.
6:00 pm Sunday, November 16 @ Brooks Museum of Art Tickets: $12 each ($8 for members of the Brooks).
Join Indie Memphis and the Brooks for this one of a kind concert film experience!
On December 15, 1977, The Who performed before a select invited audience at the Gaumont State Theatre in Kilburn, North London, to record a concert for Jeff Stein's film THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT, which turned out to be on of the last live performances by drummer Keith Moon. Shot in 35mm, this holy grail for fans has been digitally restored and re-mastered.

Special Screening of Award Winning Film
11-03-2008
In collaboration with the Sierra Club Chickasaw Group, Indie Memphis will present a special Micro Cinema Club screening of the award-winning documentary PLAGUES AND PLEASURES ON THE SALTON SEA, narrated by legendary filmmaker John Waters.
This special screening takes places at Malco’s Studio on the Square (2105 Court Avenue) on Wednesday, November 12 at 7:30 pm. Filmmaker Chris Metzler will be on hand for a Q&A after the screening. Admission is free and open to the public.
About the film:
Once known as the “California Riviera,” the Salton Sea is now called one of America’s worst ecological disasters: a fetid, stagnant, salty lake, coughing up dead fish and birds by the thousands. Created by an engineering error in 1905, reworked in the 50’s as a world class vacation destination for the rich and famous, and then suddenly abandoned after a series of hurricanes, floods, and fish die-offs, the Salton Sea has a bittersweet past.
Within the ruins of this man-made mistake, a few hardy eccentrics hang on to hope, including a roadside nudist waving at passing European tourists, a man building a religious mountain out of mud and paint, a beer-loving Hungarian Revolutionary Hunky Daddy, and the real-estate “Ronald McDonald” known simply as The Landman. Through their perceptions and misperceptions, the strange history and unexpected beauty of the Salton Sea is revealed.
While PLAGUES & PLEASURES ON THE SALTON SEA covers the historical, economic, political, and environmental issues that face the sea, it more importantly offers up an offbeat portrait of the eccentric and individualistic people who populate its shores. It is an epic western tale of fantastic real estate ventures and failed boomtowns, inner-city gangs fleeing to white small town America, and the subjective notion of success and failure amidst the ruins of the past. Hair-raising and hilarious, part history lesson, part cautionary tale and part portrait of one of the strangest communities you’ve ever seen, this is the American Dream gone as stinky as a dead carp.

So Quintron's new album TOO THIRSTY 4 LOVE is now out on Goner - and he and Miss Pussycat have been on a US Tour all month supporting it. Hooray, we say! They will be in Memphis tonight for what has to be the show of the season - don't miss it!
Here's what LA Record had to say about 'em a couple of weeks ago:
Quintron invented the dream-machine-slash-drum-machine called the Drum Buddy and Miss Pussycat invented Pussycat Caverns for her puppets, and from their Spellcaster Lodge in New Orleans they are re-inventing America. They are equally able to befriend Burmese pythons and Lou Reed, but only one appears on their new album cover.
All of that is true. Also I was listening to Liz Berg's WFMU show this morning - and she pleaded w/ her audience to go see the upcoming New York City show - saying it would be "the best thing they would see for years and years." Anyone who saw them at Goner Fest 4 or any number of other Memphis shows over the past several years would surely agree...

OMG/HaHaHa Opens Tomorrow The 'Titanic' of Indie Memphis, OMG/HaHaHa, has been booked by our friends at Malco Theatres for an exclusive week-long engagement at their Studio On The Square, where it will screen on a regular schedule for a full 7 days.
Don't miss your chance to see OMG/HaHaHa (again) on the big screen and support indie filmmaking in Memphis! If your time is short, at least swing by to purchase a ticket and pick up a tub of popcorn for the road... :)
From John Beifuss' The Bloodshot Eye: A tender and impressionistic film structured as a series of video blog entries and stream-of-consciousness vignettes about families, friends, lovers and loners in Midtown Memphis, the essentially no-budget but beautifully photographed OMG/HaHaHa was named best feature in the festival's "Hometowner" category, devoted to films produced by residents of Memphis and Shelby County.
The festival jury also decided to award a "Special Jury Prize for Directing" to Fox, and a "Special Jury Prize for Acting" to two of the film's young stars, Jake Casey and Ed Porter. The jury also gave OMG/HaHaHa a "Special Recognition" award in the Narrative Feature category (in which it competed with fims produced outside of Memphis).
OMG/HaHaHa also won the new "Special Achievement in Editing by a Memphis Filmmaker" award, sponsored by the technology company, Avid. The sweet prize for that victory: Avid Media Composer software, worth about $2,500.
Juror Elvis Mitchell, former film critic for The New York Times and host of the "Elvis Mitchell: Under the Influence" program on the Turner Classic Movies channel, said OMG/HaHaHa ... is "both playful and innovative."
Said Mitchell: "It feels like something that really is the next step - a film that could play just as well on a laptop or a cell phone as in a theater. Moviemakers have been reaching to capture that for several years now, and this achieves that feeling."
