Streetside Symphony album
07-12-2008

These guys are amazing! Originally released in February of this year while I was bedridden, I missed the CD Release. I just now got a chance to check out the new album "The Curse" and I am glad I did. I have watched these guys grow musically for some time now. Jeremy Stanfill (Vocals,Keys,Guitar), Chris Mitchell (Guitars), John Emerson (Drums) have been playing music together in different forms and facets since they were teenagers. From the heavy rock'n Crippled Nation, to The United and now their newest and very different formation, Street Side Symphony. It Simply amazes me that these guys aren't all over the world but as Jeremy says, "I like to do things my way". It's Obvious. There's no commercial pandering here, nothing but great music. It's real life and passionate. If you want to listen to some great original and best of all local music, here it is. Do yourself a favor and BUY their music. It's more that worth it.

THE REAL DELTA BLUES Blind Mississippi Morris And Brad Webb At The Center For Southern Folklore Store
07-09-2008

Ironically, people travel to Memphis from all over the world in search of blues – the good stuff as real and raw as it gets – but they often have trouble finding it. Not at the Center for Southern Folklore Store where Saturday nights this summer are dedicated to showcasing the best blues musicians in the region. With only a harmonica and a rough-edge electric guitar, Blind Mississippi Morris and Brad Webb personify that legendary juke house sound. This dynamic duo of the blues will perform Saturday, July 12 at the Folklore Store, 123 S Main @ The Peabody Place Trolley Stop in downtown Memphis. Showtime is 9:00 p.m. Admission is only $5.00.

Blind Mississippi Morris hails from Clarksdale, MS, home of many of the finest blues musicians to come out of the Delta. He hails from a musical family - two cousins in the legendary country blues band, The Mississippi Sheiks and an aunt who played with the gospel group, The Harps of Melody. Years of playing at house parties and hole-in-the wall clubs honed his trademark harmonica wail leading to his being rated one of the ten best harmonica players in the world by Bluzharp Magazine.

His partner for over 20 years, Brad Webb, got his first taste of blues guitar as a teenager and never stopped coming back for more. Growing up in Memphis, Brad heard it all – from Furry Lewis performing in a train station to the big shows at the Overton Park Shell featuring the likes of Johnny Winter, Bukka White, Fred McDowell and Moloch. A consummate guitar player and music producer, Brad Webb proved to be the perfect musical partner for Blind Mississippi Morris.

This blues duo delivers a rocking good time for folks of all ages who want to enjoy the blues in the smoke-free, family friendly Folklore Store, a special place that captures the feel of a Delta juke house where it “ain’t nothin’ but a party!”

Guitar & Drum camp
07-09-2008

Each week, from Monday thru Friday, 1pm – 5pm, we will take 10 guitar students & 3 drum students on an amazing musical journey, from wonderment to enlightenment, and show each one how to get good really quick on their instrument – and have them playing their favorite music better than they ever have before. There will be videos shown, demonstrations, and live performances from instructors to keep all the campers’ motivation & enthusiasm up. Refreshments, games & breaks as well.

Instructors

Brian Costner (myself) – been playing guitar for 19 years, piano for 26, and was a teacher of guitar, piano, & bass at Jonathan Fletcher Music in Smyrna, TN from 2001 – 2002. In 2004, began teaching at Bartlett Hills Baptist Church in Memphis, TN and continued up through 2007. Been playing in various bands & groups for 15 years, and still currently active in several Memphis bands. Can pick out any song by ear & show anyone how to play it.

Tony Sojourner – been playing drums for 26 years, DJ’ing & programming beats for 10 years, and playing live gigs for 20 years. Teaches drummers to play the drum set with a natural groove, and how to jam with other musicians.

Each student will get a CD of music learned throughout the week, songs & lessons on handouts to keep, and a camp t-shirt.

Camps will be held at Galloway United Methodist Church (1015 S. Cooper, midtown Memphis, 38104 272-2973) until school is back in session. Other locations may also be available later in the summer, so please ask. This may be a once-in-a-lifetime happening, so if you know anyone whose kid would love to learn how to play, help them save time & money by getting them on the fast path with us. This 20-hour camp is like 40 weeks of ½-hour private lessons, which usually runs around $600. But this kind of concentrated learning could never happen over the course of 6 months of lessons. And at $200, the price is just a fraction of the value received. If anyone you know is interested or wants to know more, please have them call me (Brian) at (901) 428-4606.

Memphis Well-Represented @ Bonnaroo
06-17-2008

Bonnaroo 2008 was marked by several significant happenings – from traditionally not-peace-loving Metallica's triumphant headlining set on Friday to Kanye West's controversial, crowd-infuriating performance the following night which saw the hip-hop artist take the main stage almost two hours late (4:30 AM!) to a smattering of boos.

But most significant to LFM is the ever-growing presence of Memphis artists at the 'roo. Mainstay local acts Lord T and Eloise, Amy LaVere and Oxford, MS's the Colour Revolt all performed to healthy crowds on smaller side-stages, while blues legend B.B. King and MGMT (which is co-fronted by former Memphian Andrew VanWyngarden) both entertained the masses from larger venues at the festival.

Lord T and Eloise's Lord Treadwell sent in this first-hand account of the festival:

Dear Live From Memphis Family,

Although the humid weather did not agree with my hair, I must say that the Bonnaroo Music and Arts festival exceeded my expectations for crunkness. The last time that I descended upon a fest of this scale was Glastonbury in 88'. That was before laser lights. I was really still coming off of the whole New Wave thing. But I digress....

I was honored to meet such fellow performers as !!! and MIA, who was surprised to see me so far from home. I also managed to bump in to Amy LaVere one afternoon, and we proceeded to go get free cigarettes and other swag in the artist hospitality area. As an epicurean, I enjoyed the Bonnaroo festival thoroughly, and "lived life to the lees" to the best of my ability, as Whitman once said.

The rain was in our favor the night we played as our tent, the Troo Music Lounge, filled up rather quickly. After the show, we retreated to the shower outside and washed off the sweat. It was a grand night.

Cheers,
Lord T

IT'S FREE! IT'S LEGIT! IT COULD MEAN A FILM JOB
06-17-2008

“INSIDE THE PRODUCTION OFFICE

The Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission announces the scheduling of its second fee-free city/county-funded crew training workshops, “Inside the Production Office: How to be an Office Production Assistant: 101.” The Benjamin C. Hooks Central Library is an additional sponsor. The two-day, intensive workshop will be held at the Central Library all-day Saturday, June 28th, and Sunday afternoon, June 29th.

The Commission Selection Committee will offer 30 class positions to legal residents of Memphis or Shelby County. Immediate availability to become a crew member, proven prior interest in film and television through studies and/or production work, and computer proficiency will enhance applications. A strong letter of recommendation is essential. Deadline for submission is the end of the business day June 20th. Those interested in applying should go to www.memphisfilmcomm.org to download the application form. (Minimum age for application is 18 years of age.)

The workshop will offer an introduction to what is really the hub or “nerve center” of any movie or large television show – the production office, where a team of close-knit office workers provides the support which holds a production together and moves it forward, day by day. Positions ranging from office production assistant to office production coordinator will be explained and illustrated against a general context of the workings of the film industry.

The workshop leader will be industry veteran Anne (“Andi”) McCaffrey, production supervisor on 20th Century Fox Television’s “Southern Comfort,” shot in Memphis in 2006. McCaffrey came to know Memphis well during her months living here while filming.

According to McCaffrey, “I feel as though I started training Memphians back then on-the-job as I found the production office personnel available in Memphis to be inexperienced, although very eager to learn. I welcome the opportunity to return to what has become one of my favorite production cities!”

Successful graduates of “Inside the Production Office” will be qualified to receive a listing as an “office production assistant” in the next Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission Production Directory. Moreover, graduates will be given priority consideration in selection for hiring through the Commission’s crew trainee program which provides partial refunds of crew trainee’s salaries to major film employers.

For more information, call The Commission Offices at 901-527-8300, ext. 3 or email linn@memphisfilmcomm.org

Passport to Paris: Nineteenth-Century French Prints from the Georgia Museum of Art
06-11-2008

June 15 - July 27

The 46 works featured in this exhibition embody a variety of illustrious prints made in the 19th-century that rival the prominent paintings of that period. Many of the masters presented in this exhibition are renowned for their accomplishments in sculpture and painting, while others, rediscovered in this century, are receiving recognition once again for their prints. The prints are acclaimed for the artists' obvious experimentation with and refinement of earlier techniques, such as lithography, etching and woodcut. Also of particular significance, printmakers of the 19th-century furthered the imaging of a variety of themes finding inspiration in the countryside, peasant life and the urban landscape.

"Passport to Paris" presents momentous examples of themes, techniques and styles which propelled artists of this time.

The prints featured in the exhibition include gifts to the Georgia Museum of Art from museum founder Alfred H. Holbrook and Dr. and Mrs. S. William Pelletier.

We would also like to thank all those that came out to the FABA Bash at the Hi-Tone to support LTTM's future project, 5 Shots. It was a big success and it was good to see the local support for Memphis film!

In her quest she learns the lengths people will go to; she learns how to stand up for herself; and she learns that true love can happen even behind the scenes.

"Flipping Coins"- directed by Tony Bloodworth.

From the Last Train to Memphis Indie film archives, Flippin' Coins is a 5 Takes of Nothing Picture and starring, Allison Christian, Joel Pope and Memphis film icon, J.W. Williams.
