Brett Hanover's "Bunnyland" to Premiere in Nashville
04-21-2008

After over a year and a half of work, my latest feature film, "Bunnyland," is set to premiere at the 2008 Nashville Film Festival. I will be in attendance, along with several guests from the documentary, and would love to see you there. Thank you all for your support in the past, and on this project, and I hope you can make it out. -Brett Hanover

"Bunnyland" World Premiere
at the 2008 Nashville Film Festival
Monday, April 21 at 9:00PM

Second Screening: Wednesday, April 23 at 2:00PM

Program Description: In the mountain resort of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, 73 rabbits are found slaughtered at a miniature golf course. Nearby, a small rental cabin catches fire, killing its only occupant. Connecting these two events is amateur archaeologist Johnny Tesar, the self-proclaimed "last Indian on the Trail of Tears." Johnny claims to have discovered an ancient civilization, and has collected thousands of stone artifacts to support this assertion. His bizarre scientific theories have generated controversy for decades, and the relics themselves continue to attract skeptical curiosity seekers. But in Johnny's microcosm of friends and enemies, it is even more difficult to discern all the facts of legal battles, spiritual alliances, and unexplained deaths. Bunnyland takes us into Tesar's world and all the people in it, for better or worse. Memphis filmmaker Brett Hanover lets everyone speak for themselves - neighbors, co-workers, business partners, tenants and Johnny himself - and deftly weaves a sometimes funny, sometimes mystifying, consistently bizarre look at a slice of life in eastern Tennessee enshrouded in the influence of the one and only Mr. Tesar.

“Blue Vinyl”

When filmmaker Judith Helfand’s parents decide to replace the rotting wood siding on their suburban home with cheaper, more durable blue vinyl, Helfand embarks on a quest to find out whether it's possible "to make products that never hurt anyone at any point in their life cycle." Toting a slab of siding, Helfand travels to Lake Charles, Louisiana, the vinyl capital of the United States. What she uncovers there, and in another manufacturing center, Venice, Italy, is enough to convince even her stubborn parents to take the vinyl down. Nominated for two Emmys, the film won the 2002 Messenger of the Year Award from the Environmental Grantmakers Association.

April 11, 7:00 PM: UAC to Host Third Ward, TX Movie Screening
04-04-2008

Third Ward, TX Movie Screening
Friday April 11
7:00 PM
Memphis College of Art Callicott Auditorium
1930 Poplar Avenue in Overton Park

The UrbanArt Commission, as part of their Arts Build Communities Grant through ArtsMemphis, is hosting a lecture and a screening of the documentary Third Ward, TX, produced by Memphis native Noland Walker.

The documentary focuses on Project-Row Houses, a program founded by Houston artist Rick Lowe, which was established on the principle that art and the community creating it can "revitalize even the most depressed inner-city neighborhoods, for the mutual good of existing and future residents." The program was designed, therefore, to create a sense of community through art, culture, and history in the Houston, TX Third Ward neighborhood.

In conjunction with this screening and to express the story, process, and future of the Project-Row Houses program in Third Ward, TX, director Rick Lowe will be giving a lecture on May 8th, also in the Callicott Auditorium, at 6:30 PM.

Micro Cinema Club #39

Indie Memphis Micro Cinema Club presents
The Best of MicroCineFest

Admission is free, donations are appreciated
Power House Memphis, 45 G.E. Patterson, between Main & Front Streets

In 1993, Baltimore filmmaker Skizz Cyzyk took the viewing room of the former funeral home where he lived and converted it into a microcinema (a D.I.Y. movie theater). For several years, The Mansion Theater was home to regular screenings of underground, D.I.Y., and independent films from all over the world, and became an East Coast stopping point for touring filmmakers. By 1997, the screenings had spawned MicroCineFest (MCF), a full-fledged annual film festival, which quickly distinguished itself from the few other existing underground film festivals at the time by passing on the usual subversive, transgressive, shock value fare in favor of more off-beat, oddball, substream, psychotronic, and low-budget works.

The festival was mostly interested in entertaining an under-served audience, encouraging and inspiring more filmmakers, and providing a general good time for like-minded cultural outcasts interested in the type of material other festivals normally showed at midnight, if shown at all. As a result, MCF became a highly-anticipated, ground-breaking, important event, attracting filmmakers and audiences worldwide, inspiring numerous other festivals, and garnering great press from Variety, Film Threat, Filmmaker, indieWire, and Cashiers du Cinemart, just to name a few. The Baltimore Sun called MCF, “one of the pioneering and most respected underground film festivals in the country,” CityPaper called it “one of the most prominent and idiosyncratic underground film festivals in the country,” and Chris Gore’s Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide listed it as one of the ten best underground film festivals in the world.

After ten steady years, Skizz and crew decided to put an end to the annual festival -- but not to its spirit. MCF lives on through occasional special screenings, retrospectives from festival alum, and Best Of programs (like this one) that continue to give audiences a taste of unique films they may have missed.

OF ALL THE THINGS - Sunday, March 30, 3:45 pm - Studio On The Square
The most unique comeback story of the year. Dennis Lambert was one of the most
successful and diverse songwriter/producers of the ?70s and ?80s, with hits like
?Ain?t No Woman Like The One I?ve Got?, ?Rhinestone Cowboy?, "Don't Pull Your Love",
?Baby Come Back?, ?One Tin Soldier? and ?Nightshift?. He had chart-toppers in almost
every genre of music -- at one point four of his songs were simultaneously on the
Billboard Hot 100 chart, a feat previously accomplished only by The Beatles. That
was then. Today, he?s a 60-yearold family man selling real estate in Florida. But it
turns out his obscure 1972 solo album is huge? in the Philippines. A Filipino
concert promoter has been begging Dennis to tour for decades, and in 2007
(thirty-five years after the release of his album) he finally agreed. ?Of All The
Things? is a hilarious and touching pop/rock/country/R&B documentary that follows
Dennis on his whirlwind tour as he rediscovers his passion for music -- a two week
adventure that takes him from the comforts of Boca Raton, through the remote outer
islands of the Philippines, to a sold-out show at Manila's famous Araneta Coliseum
for thousands of fans he never knew he had. Some lives deserve an encore.
Consistent hit-making and songwriting in every style of music is Dennis Lambert's
calling card.
