As an improvisational character study Open Five seeks to reveal the drama and comedy in the daily struggles, triumphs, and disappointments of life. That method might be more accurately called "discovery" than "direction." The film kicks off when two friends of Jake Rabinbach's from New York decide to drop in. "It's really the story of two women who have never visited the South visiting Memphis for a weekend," says Audley. "Hopefully, it's going to feel like a real weekend in Memphis, with whatever that entails." However it turns out, Audley is adamant that the results feel honest. "The idea of these films is that we're trying to sculpt some kind of watchable thing out of life content," he says. "I don't want extraordinary things to happen. I don't want to push the anxiety or the tension. It is what it is." In this installment of FilmMemphisTV, Chicago cinematographer Joe Swanberg discusses his experience with Memphis and the Open Five production.
