South Main Trolley Art Tour Last Friday of every month, 6 – 9 pm. Free. This monthly on-street festival is like one big progressive party where you hop to all the different South Main shops, boutiques, art galleries and businesses for live music, openings, food and wine. South Main Arts District is one of the coolest areas in Memphis, chock-full of independent entrepreneurs, loft living spaces, and creative industry businesses. Most galleries host art openings and shops offer discounts during Trolley Night and there’s usually street animation - Zombie Invasions, fashion shows, fire eaters – you never know what you might see. Check it out to get a taste of real urban experience.
BRIDGES USA Rock Climbing Wall! 477 North Fifth St., 901-452.5600, Rock Climbing Wall is open to the public on Tuesday nights and available for group rental. BRIDGES is an amazing organization helps more than 15,000 youth and adults each year in the Memphis region to find their voice, experience power and build positive relationships through courses, programs and training. Their facility on Auction Avenue near St. Jude is one of the most impressive structures in Downtown. Designed by architect Coleman Coker, the building is actually designed to look like a bridge. Inside you’ll find an incredible Experiential Learning Center equipped with zip lines, obstacle courses and of course, a rock climbing wall! BRIDGES Experiential Learning Center is uniquely equipped to provide any group - large or small, corporate, school or faith community - a set of training experiences guaranteed to create a cohesive team. The BRIDGES Center is also the first “green” commercial building in Memphis.
The Pier Restaurant 100 Wagner Place, (901) 526-7381 The land where The Pier Restaurant is now located was used as a Confederate encampment for the defense of Memphis during the Civil War. After the Civil War Joseph N. Oliver purchased this property in 1886 for $2,316.66. Then in 1907 Memphis Cold Storage Company built the structure which is now The Pier Restaurant. At the time of its construction, this was one of the tallest structures in Memphis, and one of the very first refrigerated warehouses in the entire Midsouth. Built with massive Heart Pine timber and brick, the walls vary in thickness from 2 to 5 1/2 feet thick solid brick. The Pier is a landmark serving steaks and seafood with views of the river. The Pier opened in 1977 which makes it one of the oldest restaurants in Downtown Memphis.
Gus’ World Famous Fried Chicken 310 South Front Street, 901-527-4877 It’s the best fried chicken in the world. Period. So says GQ Magazine and Business Week. Even Bon Apetit puts in the top three. The proprietary recipe started in 1953 in a shack in Mason, Tennessee and is now in what is basically shack in the heart of Downtown. Don’t be in a hurry. Don’t get too excited about the sides. It’s all about the chicken. And the catfish. Order beers, check out the juke box and get lost in the bird.
St. Blues Guitar Workshop 645 Marshall Ave, 901.578.3588 St. Blues Guitar is a manufacturer of custom guitars and basses with vintage looks inspired by the music that rose from the Delta. Their most famous customer? Why Elvis of course! Joe Walsh, Duck Dunn, Albert King and many others have a St. Blues original in their St. Blues is located in The Edge, just down the street from Sun Studios. Guitars are made with hand selected woods and crafted by boutique builders. These guitars are truly works of art. Head to their shop to find your perfect, and I mean perfect, ax.
