LFMTV - Art Poop!

The "Treatment Rooms" were by far one of the coolest things I experienced in London. Carrie Reichardt of Chiswick was basically a stranger who welcomed us into her home after our long and cramped flight to the UK.  She made us breakfast while spinning tales of her life and experiences that have made her the artist she is, and the circumstances that lead to the oasis of mosaic walls that she dwells within today.  Her home is a living master piece. Not only is she driven by the need to create, but her work is powerfully political - full of social and cultural references.  She and her partner have been working together on the house for over 7 years.  They used recycled and donated tiles, both glass and ceramic, in addition to found objects, original 3D objects and other materials.

In a place like London, where big brother's CCTV is always watching, there are often strict regulations prohibiting public art that is overtly political. As one would guess, there are also regulations to keep one from doing crazy stuff to the outside of one's home. Carrie seemed to think that because her art was made from tile and stone (which technically fits into what can be done to the outside of a home) it somehow continues to slip though the regulatory cracks. It probably helps that it would be hard to argue that her home somehow detracts from the neighborhood. On the contrary it beautifies the neighborhood and has become a unique landmark. Her neighbors even occasionally ask her to do small murals around their homes.

How cool would it be to live in a neighborhood covered in art? I'd mover there! I would certainly love to have Carrie and any one like here as a neighbor.

Cheers Carrie!

  1. The ugly brutes have met their match. This form of art (tile) meets graffti (spraypaint) is incredible. With actual deep rooted meaning behind it other than the standard tag and bag. This must have taken forever to do. WoW. Excelent coverage and story.
  2. Hey, You should post the video into the film section as well :) xoxo
  3. Revoltion begins at home - and what a great way to make your statement to change and influence what and where you can - both in globally and in your own environment. I agree with John Pickle re coverage and story - Excellent. People / Artists like Carrie are inspirational and really pleased that their stories and passions are disseminated as they encourage us all to Keep on Keepin On! You can't kill the spirit as they say. Axx
