Bob Cheevers’ “Fiona’s World” CD Release Party
09-05-2008

PLACE Center for Southern Folklore
123 S. Main Street @ Peabody Trolley Stop
Downtown Memphis

DATE: Saturday, September 13, 2008

TIME: 8:00 p.m.

ADMISSION: $5.00

Center for Southern Folklore Store

The Center for Southern Folklore Store and Berkalin Records is proud to present a CD release party for “Fiona’s World” the newest album by native Memphian now living in Austin, Bob Cheevers. The Folklore Store is located in the heart of downtown Memphis, 123 S. Main @ The Peabody Place Trolley Stop. Showtime is Saturday, September 13 at 8:00 pm. Admission is $5.00.

“Fiona’s World,” Cheevers' latest CD, is a collection of “Delta-Celtic music” – which Bob translates as, "Celtic tunes dipped in Mississippi Delta mud." Cheevers’ singular style has won over a host of "Cheevers Believers" over the years. Though a slight departure from the sound that's won over many of the Believers, it maintains the same depth and soulful delivery of his most critically acclaimed releases. The Believers will not be disappointed!

During a show on his 2006 UK summer tour, Bob Cheevers was playing in Southampton and noticed a lovely woman sketching him. Afterward, the artist presented him with the drawing and the two connected intellectually. Thus began a mystical journey and symbiotic relationship that inspired forty poems and sixteen songs in a few months time. From this body of work comes “Fiona's World.” The very sketch that brought the two together graces the cover. From the artist’s honest look at his life’s journey in “What I’ve Done for Love,” to the tender imaginings of “Plans to Meet in Paris,” to the hopeful stock-taking of “Every Beauty,” Cheevers charts the complex, heady, magical, unknowable journey through love and illuminates the path as he goes.

Bob Cheevers grew up in Memphis and lived in Los Angeles, Nashville and now Austin ‑ four of America’s premier music cities. Cheevers is a two-time Americana Top 20 artist whose music videos have won a total of 8 Emmys including “Best Musical Composition.”

08-25-2008

Last year's Festival attracted over 30,000 people who enjoyed two days and five stages of the best music, art, crafts, cooks, heritage talkers and storytellers the Memphis/Mid-South region has to offer - and this year should be even better!

Produced by the Center for Southern Folklore, the festival runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Main Street between Peabody Place and Gayoso. Stages are located at Main Street at Peabody Place Avenue, The Trolley Stop (2 stages: Cooking and Music), Main Street at Gayoso, Entrance to Folklore Hall(Talkers Corner )and the Folklore Store.

For details about the Festival go the Center's new website: www.southernfolklore.com.
Admission to the public is FREE!

This pass is valid for the entire festival and provides $1.00 off on all beverages; 2008 Festival poster for half price; priority seating when available. FESTIVAL ART The art for this year's poster and T shirt was designed by Gray and celebrates Memphis musician and performer Laura Dukes. Gray will be at the CSF sales tent signing posters during the festival.

MUSIC

Over 300 musical performers who represent the wealth of music that continues to come out of Memphis: soul, blues, jazz, bluegrass, neo soul, rockabilly, rap, classic and alt-rock, funk, country, folk, bluegrass, klezmer and more.
Highlights include a rare joint appearance by Memphis icons Jim Dickinson, Sid Selvidge and Jimmy Crosthwait; dynamic soul man Bobby Rush; the wild man of rock and boogie Jason D. Williams; Blues/Jazz/Soul/Rock diva Joyce Cobb; contemporary gospel sounds from Darrel Petties & SIP and The Brown Singers; blues from The Billy Gibson Blues Band, Blind Mississippi Morris & Brad Webb, Eden Brent, and the Homemade Jamz Blues Band; alt-rock from Alicja Trout and The River City Tanlines; U.S. Navy and Johnny Yancey Big Bands; neo-soul from Tonya Dyson & Green Onions; singer/songwriter Harlan T. Bobo; hip hop by Al Kapone; funk by Tim Terry; rockabilly legends Billy C. Riley, Sonny Burgess, and Eddie Bond; For the complete music line up:MMHF Schedule.

COOKING In the South, food isn't just something you eat. It's the reason for friends and family to gather around a table and share stories, jokes and enjoy each other's company. While some of the Festival cooks demonstrate how to prepare dishes such as greens, hot water cornbread and peach cobbler, there are others who follow recipes for traditional foods such as Choctaw fry bread, Jewish bread making, or Chinese stir fry that have been passed down for generations. Cooks include Ella Kizzie, Felix Hernandez, Deanna Lubin, Thomas Sit,Sr. Karen Febles, Judd Grisanti, and Michael Patrick.

TALKERS CORNER: DJs, quilters, baseball players, musicians and others talk about their lives and their work in a relaxed setting. The stories and reminiscences of our speakers is the essence of the Center’s mission. Here, older generations can revisit a past that seems both different yet familiar with younger generations. Talkers Corner is located in hallway leading to Folklore Hall Stage. Talkers include: Joe Scott & Reggie Williams; Eddie Bond, Sonny Burgess, Hattie Childress (quilter); Mark Stansbury (WDIA); Neil McCormick (Beer Making), and Harry Thompson(Choctaw Community),

DANCE. Nowhere is the diversity of the Mid-South region displayed as colorfully and energetically as in the various dance styles displayed at the Festival. There are venerable Choctaw dancers in their native dress, old school American square dancers in gingham dresses and string ties as well as "dressed-to-the-nines" Salsa dancers. There's Chinese dancers in traditional garb, belly dancers clad in a swirl of sheer fabrics and sharp dressing, high stepping drum lines. (The festival will present four drum lines on Sunday featuring Memphis' own Millennium Maddness Fancy Trick Drill & Drum Show Team.)

ARTS AND CRAFT VENDORS. Long before the word "recycling" came into vogue, Memphis/Mid-South craftspeople were taught the value of taking discarded bits of cloth, wood, metal, leather and paint and creating objects that are both useful as well as ornamental. Whether it's pillows and quilts made from velvet Crown Royal liquor bags or colorful paintings decorated with bottle caps, the artists featured at the Festival pride themselves on creating something from what other people would throw away. Dozens of the Mid-South's arts and crafts vendors will be proudly displaying, discussing and selling their handmade sculptures, jewelry, paintings and more. Some artists attending the festival will be Dr. Bob, Currie Williams, Jerome Fulton, Yusef Etudaiye, Lisa Lane and Stephen Hudson.

FAMILY FUN. Ultimately, the Festival's emphasis on Southern culture is about more than mere nostalgia. It's really about the future. Since the 1980s, parents have brought their children to be entertained by the puppet shows, dancers, talkers and the music that are integral to the Festival. Now those children are grown and bring their children. In this way the Center's mission endures and remains unbroken. Family fun begins each day at 11:00 at the Trolley Stop Stage with the Flying Monkey Man Band, Puppeteer Jimmy Crosthwait, Voices of the South and continues with dance performances, music workshops and cooking demonstrations.

SONGWRITING AND MUSIC WORKSHOPS. Aspiring musicians and songwriters will get a rare opportunity to learn from the masters at the Festival workshops. The Memphis Songwriters Association is sponsoring two songwriting workshops ‑one by Pierce Pettis and the other by Kim Richardson and Mary Unobsky. There will also be workshops by Randal Morton on the banjo; David Bowen guitar; Billy Gibson harmonica; David Evans on jug bands; Felix Hernandez Latin percussion; and Ekpe African drumming.

WINE TASTINGS Sponsored by Southwestern Distributors there will be 4 wine tastings in the Hall leading to the Folklore Hall Sunday, August 31st. Each tasting will include 5 wines. $10.00 per person.

EVENT DESCRIPTION:
FreeWorld has been an independent, regionally touring, ever-evolving Memphis-based musical ensemble since 1987. Drawing from influences as broad-based as Booker T. & the MG's, John Coltrane, Frank Zappa, The Grateful Dead, and The Meters, these brothers under one multicultural groove have remained a consistently entertaining and informed voice on the Memphis music scene since the group's inception.

Featuring 78-year-old jazz saxophone legend Herman Green (who has performed &/or recorded with the likes of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, B.B. King, Lionel Hampton, Clark Terry, Phineas & Calvin Newborn, Bob Weir, Rob Wasserman, Stephen Perkins and a host of others during his 63 year professional music career), the group is literally 'new school meets old school', and has been variously described as "The best of Memphis, New Orleans, & San Francisco - all rolled into one fresh & excitingly unique musical experience!"

They've also had the privilege of sharing the stage with a wide variety of music legends over the years, such as Levon Helm, The Memphis Horns, Billy Preston, Richie Havens, Blues Traveler, Derek Trucks, Hot Tuna, Los Lobos, Merl Saunders, Dr. John, Timothy Leary, John Sinclair, The Bar-Kays, Ann Peebles, Steve Cropper, James Cotton, Mojo Buford, Jimmie Vaughan & Double Trouble, Susan Tedeschi, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jonny Lang, and Widespread Panic just to name a few.

"From the Bluff", their 5th full length CD, was produced by none other than Memphis music icon Jim Dickinson - who has produced, performed and/or recorded with some of the most influential and successful recording artists of all time, including Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Sam & Dave, Arlo Guthrie, The Replacements, Big Star, and Ry Cooder among MANY others.

Recorded & mixed at his Zebra Ranch Studio in Coldwater, Mississippi, "From the Bluff" prominently features musical contributions from many special guest artists such as Luther Dickinson (lead guitarist for both The Black Crowes & North Mississippi Allstars), Cody Dickinson (drummer for North Mississippi Allstars), and "East Memphis Slim" on keyboards, as well as a host of other Memphis music luminaries including Nokie Taylor (STAX Records recording legend), Art Edmaiston (MOFRO & The Gamble Brothers Band), Hope Clayburn (Deep Banana Blackout & The Dynamites), Rick Steff (Lucero & Dexy's Midnight Runners), Jackie Johnson (Aaron Neville & Cat Power), and The Masqueraders & James Govan (Beale Street performing stalwarts).

The songs on "From the Bluff" are exceptionally well-written (primarily composed by various combinations of the core songwriting team of bassist/vocalist/lyricist Richard Cushing, drummer/lyricist David Skypeck, guitarist Brian Overstreet, and trumpeter/vocalist/lyricist E.J. Dyce), with the lyrical content ranging from light-hearted, observational "slices of life" to deeper philosophical musings, while the music remains true to the oft-touted FreeWorld standards of superb musicianship, tight arrangements and a wide-ranging stylistic and instrumental prowess.

"From the Bluff" is undoubtedly FreeWorld's best and finest recording to date, and again proves the age-old adage: Great music, played from the heart, never goes out of style!

In addition, "From the Bluff" also proudly features original paintings on both the front & back covers (and on the CD itself) by prominent Memphis-based artists David Lynch & Lamar Sorrento.

In addition, if you would like a copy of "From the Bluff" for review, promotional or airplay purposes, please let us know & we'll get one to you ASAP. For any additional publicity needs, please feel free to contact our publicist:

08-18-2008

SunTrust Rock for Love 2 benefit for Church Health Center planned for August 22-23 at the Hi Tone

Lord T and Eloise, Snowglobe to headline respective nights

SunTrust Rock for Love 2, the second-annual concert to benefit the Church Health Center, is set for Aug. 22-23 at the Hi-Tone, 1913 Poplar Ave.

The concert – actually two back-to-back nights of music – will not only raise vital funds for the Center, but it will also celebrate the diversity of Memphis music with performances by some of the city’s best bands.

Friday, Aug. 22 – Lord T and Eloise, Al Kapone, Two Way Radio, J.D. Reager and the Cold Blooded Three and Vending Machine. Emcee: Chris Vernon, host of “The Chris Vernon Show” on 730 Fox.

Saturday, Aug. 23 – Snowglobe, the Coach and Four, Antenna Shoes, Oh No! Oh My! and Royal Bangs. Emcee: Janet Wilson, host “Janet’s Planet” on WEVL, FM 89.9.

Tickets are on sale at Goner Records and Shangri-La in midtown and online at HiToneMemphis.com. Tickets for each night are $10, or tickets for both nights can be purchased together for $18. Cost to get in each show will be $10 at the door if tickets are available.

A limited number of supertickets will also go on sale for $100 each. Each superticket is good for both Hi Tone shows plus access to an exclusive barbecue reception for bands, sponsors and VIPs at Ardent Studios on Thursday, Aug. 21. The reception will feature a performance by the Subteens.

Doors at the Hi Tone open at 8 p.m. and each show will start at 9 p.m. Memphis Roller Derby will host a silent auction, and there will be a variety of CDs, T-shirts and other merchandise available for purchase, all to benefit the Center.

SunTrust Rock for Love 2 is presented by Ardent Studios and Makeshift Music. Other sponsors include the Memphis Music Commission, Memphis Music Foundation, Center City Commission, 2 Chicks and a Broom, the Hi-Tone, B.B. King’s Blues Club, Bluff City Sports, Memphis Flyer, 730 Fox, Goner Records, Memphis Downtowner, Yarbrough’s Music, Strings and Things, Sasha Barr – This is the New Year, Live from Memphis, Rocket Science Audio and the Memphis Roller Derby.

“SunTrust is honored to partner with one of our community’s most vital assets, the Church Health Center,” said John Frazer, president and CEO of SunTrust Bank in Memphis. “We applaud their mission to offer hope and healing throughout our community.”

Makeshift co-owner J.D. Reager said it’s fitting that the Memphis music community is coming together to support the work of the Church Health Center. After all, the Center has provided quality, affordable healthcare to thousands of uninsured working people in Shelby County – many of whom are working musicians.

“Memphis is a music town, but there are a lot of musicians here who don’t have health insurance,” said Reager who will pull double duty this year, playing in his own band and Two Way Radio. “Last year’s Rock for Love was an amazing experience, and this year is going to be even bigger and better, both in terms of community support and the show itself. It wouldn’t surprise me if both shows sell out.”

This week at OTHERLANDS: Jimmy Davis, Jay Clark, Richard Ford, John Elliott, Blair Combest
08-08-2008

Friday, August 8: Jimmy Davis, Jay Clark, Richard Ford

Saturday, August 9: John Elliot (The Hereafter), Blair Combest

Friday, August 8: Jimmy Davis, Jay Clark, Richard Ford

Jimmy Davis has been named "Premier Male Vocalist" five times by the Memphis Chapter of NARAS (the Grammy folks). In 1996, Davis, with guitarist and Junction bandmate Tommy Burroughs, re-formed The Riverbluff Clan, a renowned Memphis rockin’-country-bluegrass outfit from the ‘70’s. The band released two critically acclaimed independent CDs. The live album One Night in a Month of Sundays was heralded for its "hybrid vigor," while the studio CD Two Quarts Low was called a "genre-bending romp through bluegrass, country and country-tinged rock". It garnered a top 20 spot on the Gavin Americana chart and the song “Two Quarts Low” was even covered by RBC favorite John Cowan. The Clan also appeared in the award winning independent film The Poor & Hungry, directed by Craig Brewer (Hustle and Flow), performing Davis’ "Honeysuckle and Kudzu."

In 2004, Jimmy made his solo debut with a CD of self-penned songs entitled Jimmy Daddy’s Acoustic Song List. Songs like "Grandmother’s Quilt," "Devil’s Den," "I Gotta Roll" and "Waiting in the Wings" honor every style of music Davis has ever approached.

JAY CLARK Jay Clark grew up in Winchester, Tennessee and began playing guitar during his high school years. Since leaving Winchester to attend college in 1992, he has been actively involved in songwriting and performing.

Since the release of Pen to Paper, Jay has opened for artists such as Billy Joe Shaver, the John Cowan Band, Malcolm Holcomb, Sally Barris, Jeff Barbra and Sarah Pirkle, Blue Moon Rising, and Robinella. He also contributed to Robinellas Dualtone release, Solace for the Lonely (2006), by singing harmony on 2 songs and co-writing another.

Jay recently moved to Hazel Green, Alabama, and released his sophomore recording, titled Progress, in February 2006. As with Pen to Paper, Progress was produced by Cruz Contreras and Jay, recorded with the CC Stringband, and features harmonies by Robinella (including a duet). He has started performing beyond the Knoxville area, frequently opening shows for Robinella, as well as touring on his own as a solo act. Progress and Pen to Paper are available at www.jayclarkmusic.com.

Saturday, August 9: John Elliot (The Hereafter), Blair Combest

JOHN ELLIOTT John Elliot returns to Otherlands, following a splendid performance with Cory Branan during the February Folk Alliance.

The Hereafter is the music project of singer/songwriter john Elliott. It has been called "post-Seinfeld, post-9/11, eyebrow rock" and John's songwriting has garnered comparisons to Paul Simon in the press.

BLAIR COMBEST Blair Combest wants to tell you something.

Don't worry, it's not in the abstract, self-aware, singer-songwriter way. Just walk up and say hello and you'll know which way I mean. You'll practically be able to see the gears spinning at hyper-speed as he propels from one subject to the next. Not many people can easily transition from the migration of monarch butterflies to the wonders of the renal system, and that's just in the first five minutes. The conversational topics may seem dizzyingly disparate, but if you listen closely, you'll pick up the connections between them, the curious, the mundane, the incredible, the hysterical. Aligned at the core of this musician, they fit together to form a unique perspective on life, love, and other hazards of humanity.

Blair is a frequent performer at Otherlands where he hosts our monthly Girls Night Out shows, emceeing and performing duets with all the artists. This is a great environment to sample his prolific song writing talents.

Indie Memphis to present short films by award-winning Canadian filmmaker
08-08-2008

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Indie Memphis will present a showcase of the short films of award-winning Canadian filmmaker Jamie Travis, whose work “lies somewhere between the worlds of David Lynch and Wes Anderson,” according to Twitchfilm.net. Hosted by Power House Memphis, the program takes place on Wednesday, August 13 at 7:30 pm at Power House Memphis (45 G.E. Patterson, between Main & Front Streets). Admission is free, but donations are appreciated.

The program will feature the complete short film work of Jamie Travis, including:

WHY THE ANDERSON CHILDREN DIDN'T COME TO DINNER (13 min.), which FilmThreat.com called “the kind of film Tim Burton wishes he could make. Kind of touching, kind of morbid and totally original.”

THE SADDEST BOY IN THE WORLD (14 min.), which BlogTo.com said “features a color palette and musical score that is more reminiscent of a happy old-style physical comedy than a melancholic look at childhood depression... This is hands-down the best short film I have ever
seen."

PATTERNS (9 min.), which the State News in Lansing, Michigan called “the most visually stimulating film you will ever see.”

PATTERNS 2 (14 min.) & PATTERNS 3 (20 min.), which The Torontoist described as “strange and playful films with gorgeous design; utterly hypnotic, and with the song-and-dance sequence of PATTERNS 3, endlessly quotable.”

Over the course of nearly a decade, the Academy has grown to serve several hundred Memphis youth annually at its two-story, state-of-the-art learning facility neighboring the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. The Academy offers four programs annually: the SNAP! Summer Music Camp, SNAP! AfterSchool, SoulSchool: Spring Break, and the Summer Soul Tour, as well as a four-show Concert Series.
