FATE SCORES, a film by director and actor Albert M. Chan, will have its Memphis premiere on Saturday April 25th, 2009, at 12:45pm at the Malco Ridgeway Four as part of On Location: Memphis International Film Festival. The film also screens this month at the Wisconsin Film Festival, the Boston International Film Festival, and the Southeast New England Film, Music & Arts Festival in Providence. The screenplay for FATE SCORES, which was written by Chan, features a single location: a long, cement bench that accommodates about ten people. "I was madly scouting for an appropriate bench," recalls Chan, an alumnus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). "After a long and thorough search, I discovered exactly the kind of bench I was looking for right at MIT. I must have passed that bench hundreds or even thousands of times in my seven years at MIT without ever noticing it." FATE SCORES explores themes of isolation, connection, and chance, and is a thoughtful look at the seemingly random interactions between ten strangers which eventually culminate into something extraordinary. "FATE SCORES was inspired by my experiences observing ordinary people interact in impersonal urban environments," explains Chan, who grew up in Toronto, Canada, and has spent the last twelve years in Boston. "One can witness a wealth of human drama everyday at a place so mundane as a city park bench, but only if one pays attention." As part of an underrepresented ethnic minority in film and TV, Chan cast actors who reflect the ethnic diversity he’s accustomed to seeing in Toronto and Boston. "I’m proud to say that ethnic minorities make up about half the cast," Chan said. "Filmmaking can be such a powerful tool when it comes to changing people’s perceptions and the stereotypes they’re used to seeing from typical Hollywood fare." In addition to Chan, the cast includes Heidi Rhodes, Mary Niederkorn, Jonathan Vittum, Angela Gunn, Brian D. Evans, Ben Katz, Kandace Cummings, Katarina Morhacova, and Roxanne Y. Morse. Chan is an experienced film and TV actor who recently broadened his interests to filmmaking with FATE SCORES, his first film. His acting credits include roles on Showtime’s BROTHERHOOD, the pilot episode for CW Network’s I’M PAIGE WILSON, and Disney’s feature film UNDERDOG. Chan next appears as Sam in New Line Cinema’s GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST starring Matthew McConaughey, Jennifer Garner, and Michael Douglas, which opens May 1st, 2009, in theaters nationwide. Chan also recently finished wrapping up a role as Dr. Lee in the upcoming film EVERY DAY starring Helen Hunt, Liev Schreiber, Brian Dennehy, and Carla Gugino. FATE SCORES is produced by Chanal Productions, in association with Aaron Howland and Seth Howland of 7 Fluid Oz. Productions LLP. For more information about the film, visit fatescores.com. Now in its 10th year, On Location: Memphis International Film Festival is a competitive 4-day festival that features a diverse mix of local and global films.
