Next week in Austin, Tex., the South by Southwest festival will honor the winners of a film and television titles competition, a rare move to recognize those miniature stories and graphics displays that surround the opening credits before the real story unfolds.

“We think no one has done it before,” said Janet Pierson, the producer of the film portion of South by Southwest, which begins on Friday and is scheduled to present awards on Tuesday.

Ms. Pierson, speaking by telephone, said she believed no major festival had yet devoted an award to title sequences. It is a minor art that appears to be gaining stature as even the smallest films use increasingly accessible computer graphics techniques, or just pure imagination, to get a movie moving.

A four-day tribute through art, film, music and words to the late Watson Davis, the innovative Malco ad man and ballyhoo specialist known for his elaborate movie promotions and who, in his guise as the ‘horror host’ known as Sivad (on the “Fantastic Features” program from 1962 to 1972 on WHBQ-TV Channel 13), was one of the most influential and beloved Memphis pop-culture heroes of the era, with a popularity that crossed generational and racial lines.

A free informational seminar "FILM CREW BOOT CAMP: HOW TO SURVIVE IN THE CHANGING WORLD OF FILM" is being offered to people who work in film crews or who have an interest in filming in Memphis.

Attendees will learn from professionals who have national reputations in various areas of film production.

The seminar is produced by Michael S. 'Mike' Ryan who has worked on numerous films, including the filmed-in-Memphis productions "21 Grams" (2003) and the Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winner "Forty Shades of Blue"
(2005). He is also producing "Losers Take All," a movie to be shot in Memphis this summer.

Topics Include:
-- "How to Protect Yourself on a Low-Budget Film"
-- "The Union Perspective vs. The Non-Union Perspective" (with Mike Ryan, Teamster Local 984 President/Business Manager Terry Lovan, and I.A.T.S.E.-Studio Mechanics Tennessee President, two-time Academy Award-Nominee Peter Kurland)
-- "Making Films in Memphis" (A Panel of Memphis Producers)

[BREAKDANCER] Any age and ethnicity. Brief dancing scene. Must be willing to wear full face paint.

[BIKINI MODEL] Female, 20s, any ethnicity. Lures with graceful and seductive gate. (MUST provide wardrobe)

[GLOBETROTTER] Male, 20s-30s, african american. Agile basketball player. The court is his and will destroy anyone who challenges his authority. (provide wardrobe a plus, any basketball uniform)

[REF] Male, 30s-80s, any ethnicity. Vigorous basketball referee. The court is his and will humiliate anyone who challenges his authority. (provide own wardrobe a plus)

The Memphis Area Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts is hosting an event on Wednesday, Feb 24 from 5-7pm in the 4th Floor Reading Roomat the new University of Memphis Law School (1 North Front Street).  This is a perfect opportunity to find out how this great group of volunteer lawyers can assist you with your legal questions.

MAVLA exists to help artists and musicians set up a legal framework in which to do business.  Our goal is to help them take the next step to becoming professionals.

  • Should you be doing business as a corporation or LLC?
  • Why is it important to have a written band agreement?
  • How do Trademarks and Copyrights work?

MAVLA is having  this reception to introduce themselves to artists and musicians in the community.

An independent, family-oriented "horsey" feature, FANDANGO (working title)started filming yesterday in Shelby County.  "Extras" (non-paid) needed today starting 11:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. this evening. Tomorrow, Wednesday, extras needed from 1 p.m. - 7 p.m. Drop by NOW --you'll share the spotlight with stars Luke Perry and Armand Assande.

Looking for an exciting learning opportunity for media and film students that connects you locally while promoting your work globally? The Emmy-nominated International Documentary Challenge is proving to be just that with past participants calling it "invigorating", "rewarding", "a high", and even "a life altering experience." Many of the past participants (and winners!) of the Doc Challenge have been groups of students (alone or led by a teacher) at all levels from high school students to community media and art institute classes to film, documentary and journalism majors at universities.

"I Am a Man" won four regional Emmys at the 24th Annual Mid South Emmy Awards, which was heldon Saturday night at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville.  The Memphis-based film won Emmys in the following categories:

-Historical Documentary
-Director- Programs Division (Jonathan Epstein)
-Music Composer / Arranger (Scott Bomar and Deanie Parker)
-Writer- Programs Division (John Hubbell)

The 25 minute documentary looks at the infamous Memphis sanitation strike that brought Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to town through the eyes of 70-something Elmore Nickelberry-- who still collects garbage for the city.

Live From Memphis currently produces a website, videos, live events, and is planning a print magazine for late 2009. Launched in January of 2001, LFM has earned much praise for it's grassroots support of local creatives through it's unique, original content, events, and website.

We are Memphis' largest online archive of Memphis Music, Film and Art.
