Friday, March 20: Woodshed Introducing WOODSHED. What if you gathered some of the best alt country, Americana, and bluegrass pickers in Memphis, Tennessee and crammed them into one band. That's Woodshed. Jed Zimmerman, on vocals and acoustic guitar, Mark McKinney (Tennessee Boltsmokers, Pawtuckets) on electric guitar and vocals, David Pierce (2 Mule Plow, Tennessee Boltsmokers) on mandolin and vocals, Richard Ford (Riverbluff Clan, 2 Mule Plow) pedal steel and vocals, Alan Yee (Hi Electric, Los Cantadores) on bass, and Robbie Cash (Devil Train, Bumper Crop) on drums. So fresh they just named the band last week. We saw their Memphis debut last at P&H and it was stellar. Come catch them at Otherlands this week. JED ZIMMERMAN (vocals, acoustic guitar) Although Jed is not a household name in his hometown of Memphis, he has made quite an impact on tour throughout the southwest, performing both as a solo artist and formerly with the duo Jed and Kelley. He has been a top draw act in the best listening rooms in the country, garnering critical acclaim, and getting regular rotation airplay on XM Radio. "Townes Van Zandt wrote "to sing for the sake of the song", and that's exactly for what Jed Zimmerman strives. Jed, owning every Dylan record at one time or another, cites Peter Rowan, Townes Van Zandt, and Gordon Lightfoot as definite influences. http://www.myspace.com/zimmermanjed MARK McKINNEY (electic guitar, vocals) made his name as frontman for The Pawtuckets, and later in the Tennessee Boltsmokers. Their first release, Songs From the Floor, was released in late 2003. The sophomore release, Hydroradio. The name was derived listening to the first hydroelectric powered radio station in the U.S., located in the Catskills Mountains area. The Boltsmokers are forging a new musical path in bluegrass music that could only come from a collision of musical styles in that mysterious Memphis-way. Stay tuned for the Boltsmokers latest CD release Vintage All American Dream. You can sample some tracks here... http://www.myspace.com/tnboltsmokers DAVID PIERCE (mandolin, vocals) got his musical influences in college, hanging out with Memphis legends, Fatback Jubilee and the River Bluff Clan. From 1999 through 2003, he toured on the bluegrass festival circuit with the Tennessee Gentlemen. He was recently nominated for his first Premier Player's Award by the Memphis Chapter of NARAS (the Grammys). Nowadays, he plays mandolin and sings for both 2 Mule Plow and The Tennessee Boltsmokers. http://www.myspace.com/2muleplow RICHARD FORD (pedal steel, vocals) Richard is a 5-time nominee of the Memphis Chapter of N.A.R.A.S. in the Premier String Player category. He has recorded with a wide array of national entertainers including Ryan Adams, Gate Mouth Brown, Cory Branan, Jimmy Davis, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Johnny Copeland, The Hodges Brothers, The Twilight Singers and many many others. As a songwriter, Richard has written and co-written songs for artists including John Kilzer, Jimmy Davis, and John Cowan. Recently one of Richard’s songs was featured on Car Talk, a program on National Public Radio. http://www.myspace.com/richardfordsongs $5 Cover. Doors at 7 pm. Show at 8 pm. All ages. Smoke free. Beer Coffee and Food. Large patio and deck. 641 S Cooper. 901-278-4994. www. myspace.com/otherlands Saturday, March 21: The West Coast Turnaround THE WEST COAST TURNAROUND have made their bona fides as a Country and Western supergroup in Memphis. Originally named with the mouthful monicer "Papa Tops West Coast Turnaround," the band plays classic, cry-in-your-beer, country with tongue often planted firmly in cheek. Their influences run the gamut of classic country: Johnny Cash, Buck Owens, Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard, Tammy Wynette, George Jones, Ray Price, Charlie Rich, Hank Williams, Earnest Tubb, Hank Thompson, Kitty Wells, Webb Pierce, Willie, Waylon, The Wilburn Brothers, Porter Wagoner, Patsy Cline, Johnny Paycheck, and Red Sovine. They are a ready made country and western jukebox, but listen close because a whole lot of these songs are originals. And as they are fond of saying: "If we were a jukebox, you'd be drunk by now." Assembled from a well known crew of Memphis musicians and music journalists, The West Coast Turnaround are Chris Davis, vocals, Faith Wallace, vocals, John Stivers, guitar, John Whittemore, pedal steel, baritone, and electric guitars, Clint Wagner, fiddle, Baker Yates, bass, and Mark Jordan, drums. This will be an EARLY, All Ages show for Papa Tops. An unusual event for a band that lists their interests as "Drinkin'. Cheatin'. Fightin'. Mostly Drinkin'." So be there at 8:00, bring the kids and phone the neighbors. To clear up all inquiries, BEER WILL BE SOLD AT THIS SHOW. And coffee too. http://www.myspace.com/papatopswestcoastturnaround $5 Cover. Doors at 7 pm. Show at 8 pm. All ages. Smoke free. Beer Coffee and Food. Large patio and deck. 641 S Cooper. 901-278-4994. www.myspace.com/otherlands |
