i am a visual artist and i live in memphis. i came here in 2007 from houston, texas. what i call my art is not what other people usually call art, but in my world those sorts of titles are pretty fluid. i like to create environments where other people can have fun, but i like to stay behind the scenes whilst others enjoy my spaces. changing my job title on a daily basis is a very good way to keep myself infotained, and i try to have fun every day and i think of that alone as my art. i have no idea why live from memphis thinks that i've got anything important or interesting to say, but i thought it would be fun to have a public forum in which i can rant, rave, wallow, celebrate, free associate and cuss like a trailer park hoochie.
in my spare time i'm a superhero, a championship horseman, a millionaire playboy, and a level 8 expert floor sanitation engineer. anyone who takes me too seriously deserves what they have coming to them, and i wish you all an amazing thursday.
so i've got some friends coming through town on their summer time rock and roll tour. they make absolutely absurd music and they put on a great show every time. apparently none of our esteemed rock and roll clubs thought they could handle the awesomeness that is screamin' cyn cyn and the pons, so they are going to play a basement show. a basement show where, you ask? well, how many basement venues do we have in our fair city? they are, of course, gonna be doing it all night long at vini.
you may remember the pons' lead singer from such classic episodes as shaneshane and wilhilmena baker and their totally tittastic tea tour last year...
Adobe Flash Player not installed or older than 9.0.115!
the show is happening in july, don't worry, you'll see some wicked cool screened posters all over town for it...we're currently in negotiations with some local acts to share the bill with our friends from madison, wisconsin.
anybody wanna sell me a building? i have $63 american.
and to all the ladies in the place with style and grace, please ease up... i been spoken for.
but you prolly won't see me, just the stuff i made.
so two days before shooting started on the feature film who's name has, i think, yet to be decided (it started as 'fandango', then switched to 'a horse tale', and most recently was rumored to be titled 'a fine step') i got a call from my friend, your friend, the lovely miss darian corley. she told me that she had room for one more on her art department crew for the movie, and not having any good reason to say no, i quickly agreed to get on the team.
i've been out of memphis for a week now with a week to go and who woulda thought i'd be missing it so bad. it's not just my studio, but the coffee shop across the street and damnit if i didn't miss all the snow.
i must apologize to my avid fans (my mother, my aunt, and apparently some guy in minneapolis called josh) for being remiss in my duties as a blogger. it's not something that i'm used to, this writing thing.
i dropped my computer on the floor. it still goes, it's just that i can't see where it's gone. i've had to drag an external monitor up to the coffee shop to write this, so i hope the effort is recognized. send me some cookies or frozen chili.
so the last post i wrote coupled with holtermonster in hiding's "Schedule THIS" post spurred quite a lively feisbük debate on the organization and communication of arts entities in the memphis scene. here is some of the back and forth....
we're hustlin. all day. every day. now we're not slinging chopped and screwed mixtapes or zebra print rugs, but this is a hustle no less. our product is a scene. it's a sense of community and activity and most importantly, inclusion.
I don't go out even a tenth of how often i should. It's the only job that I have, and yet I find that the space that my ladyfriend and I have created, with all our toys and tools, is my favorite place to be. I say it's the only job I have because it's a fact that in our little art world, if you want people come see your shit, then you have to go see theirs. For me, that makes the times when I do manage to wrangle myself from my space and my toys kinda special, and i want to get out and see as much as I can of what other folks are doing.
it's been a long time since i've written anything but press releases and other things to hype what my friends or i are doing. i don't really even know where to begin...what to write about. i am hesitant to write reviews of the stuff i see because i don't want to be a hater and i really don't like much. so...
