MEMPHIS MUSIC FOUNDATION OFFERING FREE SOUTH BY SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE REGISTRATIONS
09-26-2008

Bands who intend to apply for South by Southwest music conference can save a few bucks by visiting the Memphis Music Resource Center. The first 50 bands who visit the Center can get their registration fee waived by the Memphis Music Foundation. Bands can also express their interest in being part of an official Memphis music showcase planned for the March conference.

What: Free SXSW registration
When: Now until November 4
Where: Memphis Music Resource Center

431 South Main Street, Ste. 201

Each year thousands of bands around the country register to participate in South by Southwest music conference in Austin, Texas. Recognized as the country’s biggest music conference, SXSW offers musicians an opportunity to be heard by record labels, publishers, media and booking agents. Last year local act Lucero came out of the conference with a five album deal with Universal Records. Understanding the conference’s significance to local musicians, the Memphis Music Foundation wants to decrease the hardship of registration and help increase the number Memphis bands represented at the event.

The Memphis Music Foundation, along with other Memphis organizations including the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau and Music Memphis, will be leading a Memphis music delegation at SXSW 2009. The Memphis music presence will include an official Memphis Music Showcase, VIP Party and exhibition presence to promote the local music industry. The strategy is part of the Memphis Music Foundation’s Ambassador program, which takes Memphis talent on the road to significant entertainment industry events to advance Memphis music and position the city as an independent music center.

11th ANNUAL INDIE MEMPHIS FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES STELLAR COMPETITIVE LINEUP
09-21-2008

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Indie Memphis announces the competitive lineup for its eleventh annual Indie Memphis Film Festival, set to take place October 9-16 at Malco's Studio on the Square in midtown Memphis.

Indie Memphis utilizes Memphis' rich cultural history to serve as a connecting point for regional filmmakers from all corners of the country - and provides a showcase for films celebrating Southern stories and storytelling. The festival builds bridges that inspire filmmakers and film lovers to collaborate and connect within the unique creative landscape that is the home of the Blues and the birthplace of Rock 'n' Roll.

This year's competitive lineup presents twelve narrative features and twelve feature-length documentaries. An eclectic mix of styles and genres, the narrative feature film lineup includes eight regional premieres, three Tennessee premieres, and two "Hometowners" by Memphis / Shelby County filmmakers.

ADVENTURES OF POWER - Tennessee Premiere (96 min. / directed by Ari Gold)
Ari Gold, Adrian Grenier, Jane Lynch, Michael McKean star in ADVENTURES OF POWER, a comedy about a mine worker named Power who journeys across America to save his hometown using his talent for air-drumming. On his journey, he gathers an assortment of outcasts who believe that their obsession could change the world.

CHASING THE WHITE DRAGON - Regional Premiere (95 min. / directed by Kathilynn Phillips)
Shot in Tupelo, Mississippi, CHASING THE WHITE DRAGON is like a carnival ride in a tempest. This gripping, fast-paced tale depicts a fictional group of crystal meth users trapped in a torrent of violence, deceit, paranoia, and passion who must either leap from the careening roller coaster or ride it to its nightmarish end.

THE HUMAN TRACE - Regional Premiere (106 min. / directed by Jason Satterlund)
Shot in Nashville, THE HUMAN TRACE is a mystery / thriller where the murder victims are found with no cause of death. A lone undercover cop fights to solve the mystery before the evil comes for him.

IBID - Regional Premiere (84 min. / directed by Russell Friedenberg)
IBID is a colorful and unconventional slapstick comedy which follows the adventures of two quixotic characters on a cross-country adventure in search of themselves - all the while posing the question: In a world gone mad, who's really crazy?

MAKE-OUT WITH VIOLENCE - Memphis Premiere (108 min. / directed by The Deagol Brothers)
Shot in Nashville, MAKE-OUT WITH VIOLENCE is a genre-bending tale of a boy trying to fulfill his unrequited love for a girl who has risen from the dead. Set against the backdrop of a summer of cicadas and swimming pools, the film blends elements of up-beat teenage melodrama with the strange gravity of classic coming-of-age stories.

MY EFFORTLESS BRILLIANCE - Tennessee Premiere (79 min. / directed by Lynn Shelton)
Successful, self-involved novelist Eric Lambert Jones has been dumped by his life long buddy Dylan. In an attempt to piece together the fractured friendship, Eric departs from his latest book tour to drop in on Dylan, newly settled in the backwoods of Washington State. An awkward weekend ensues as the two estranged friends and Dylan's laconic new buddy Jim, chop wood, match wits and ultimately embark on a late-night, booze-soaked cougar hunt.

THE NEW YEAR PARADE - Regional Premiere (90 min. / directed by Tom Quinn)
Set against the backdrop of Philadelphia's Mummery, one of the oldest American folk traditions, THE NEW YEAR PARADE follows Jack and Kat McMonagle over the course of a year as their parents separate, struggle with their decisions, and eventually divorce. As past indiscretions are exposed, Jack and Kat question their own identities while struggling to build meaningful relationships.

OMG/HAHAHA - Regional Premiere / Hometowner (74 min. / directed by Morgan Jon Fox)
Cleverly reflective of today's YouTube/MySpace generation, and shot in an improvisational, documentary style, OMG/HAHAHA opens a window to the lives of
several young people in Memphis. A teenager's video blog frames the various stories as he introduces his circle of friends and their troubles from unexpected pregnancy to homophobia, break-ups to dying parents.

PAPER COVERS ROCK - Regional Premiere (90 min. / directed by Joe Maggio)
PAPER COVERS ROCK tells the story of Sam, a young woman who loses custody of her six year-old daughter in the wake of an unsuccessful suicide attempt. After a brief stay at a psychiatric facility, Sam moves in with her older sister, who graciously offers to help Sam piece her life together. But the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and it is not at all clear whether her sister is out to save or destroy her.

SOUTH OF HEAVEN - Regional Premiere (97 min. / directed by J.L. Vara)
Roy Coop has just finished serving Uncle Sam and he's come home to find his brother, Dale Coop, nowhere to be found and he's left a lot of angry men looking for him. Meanwhile, in the Wild West, Dale Coop is finding himself caught up in a crime spree under the manic tutelage of Mad Dog Mantee. SOUTH OF HEAVEN is a cinephile's dream: A mix of film noir, Spaghetti Western, and Pee Wee's Playhouse.

THE WAY I SEE THINGS - Regional Premiere / Hometowner (85 min. / directed by Brian Pera)
Depressed over the unexpected death of his longtime companion, Otto undertakes a cross-country road trip with his interminably perky friend Rob in an effort to escape his own painful memories. Rob thinks the trip will help Otto pull himself together. Instead, Otto falls further apart. At a rest stop, he escapes with a carload of strangers, leaving behind his friend, his past, and even his name.

WOODPECKER - Tennessee Premiere (83 min. / directed by Alex Karpovsky)
Fanatical birdwatchers have descended upon a small town in the Arkansas bayou in hopes of finding the celebrated Ivory Billed Woodpecker. Declared extinct in the 1940's, the bird has apparently been spotted by numerous experts. Enter amateur birder and poet Johnny Neander, who has convinced his taciturn sidekick that he will be the one to find the elusive woodpecker.

Featuring a wide variety of subjects, this year's documentary film lineup includes one world premiere, one U.S. premiere, five regional premieres, three Tennessee premieres and two "Hometowners" by Memphis / Shelby County filmmakers.

THE ARTS INTERVIEWS: A COMPILATION - World Premiere / Hometowner (54 min. / directed by Joann Self Selvidge)
Created to celebrate the lives and creative work of older regional artists who have made a significant contribution to Memphis and the art world, this compilation weaves together a beautiful collective narrative from thirteen in-depth interviews with painters, photographers, and sculptors. Subjects include: Billy Price Carroll, Larry Edwards, George Hunt, Dick Knowles, Marjorie Liebman, Veda Reed, Murray Riss, Ted Rust, Dolph Smith, Agnes Stark, Mahaffey White, Ernest Withers, and Steve Yee.

'BAMA GIRL - Tennessee Premiere (72 min. / directed by Rachel Goslins)
'BAMA GIRL follows a charismatic black woman's quest to become the 2005 Homecoming Queen at the University of Alabama, one of the great old Deep South institutions. Homecoming has a rich history at the University, tied into centuries of privilege, old money, power and racial exclusivity. This is a film about black and white, about the Old South and the New South, and about an unexpected microcosm of electoral
politics that mirrors much of what is happening across our country today.

BI THE WAY - Tennessee Premiere (87 min. / directed by Brittany Blockman, Josephine Decker)
For young people today, dating a girl one week and a guy the next is no big deal. Journeying through the changing sexual landscape of America, BI THE WAY follows five members of this emerging 'whatever generation,' while investigating the latest scientific, social, and roadside reports on bisexuality.

BUNNYLAND - Memphis Premiere / Hometowner (87 min. / directed by Brett Hanover)
In the mountain resort of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, 73 rabbits are found slaughtered at a miniature golf course. Nearby, a small rental cabin catches fire, killing its only occupant. Connecting these two events is amateur archaeologist Johnny Tesar, the self-proclaimed "last Indian on the Trail of Tears." Johnny claims to have discovered an ancient civilization, and has collected thousands of stone artifacts to support this assertion. His bizarre scientific theories have generated controversy for decades, and the relics themselves continue to attract skeptical curiosity seekers.

FULL MOON LIGHTNIN' - U.S. Premiere (93 min. / directed by John Gardiner)
It has been over 60 years since New York City bluesman, Floyd Lee, left the hill country of Mississippi and with his exodus he turned his back on a troubled childhood and a harsh life in the cotton fields. Now at the age of 73, Floyd and his band embark on a deeply personal journey back home to Mississippi to reconnect with the family he left behind and search for the family he never knew. Along the way they are forced to deal with a tragedy that will change their lives forever.

HI MY NAME IS RYAN - Regional Premiere (78 min. / directed by Paul Eagleston, Stephen Rose)
Meet Ryan Avery - the milk and cookies connoisseur, the photo booth artist, the fake mustache aficionado, and the punk rock performance artist. Faced with the battles of adolescence, Ryan takes happiness into his own hands, determined to make his life awesome. Discovering the therapeutic power of entertaining others, he begins a constant involvement in a preposterous number of bands, performance groups, and art projects, steadily pushing the boundaries of decency, absurdity and safety - forcing all in his path to consider the universal question: "What is art?"

NESHOBA - Regional Premiere (90 min. / directed by Micki Dickoff, Tony Pagano)
NESHOBA tells the story of a Mississippi town still divided about the meaning of justice, 40 years after the murders of three civil rights workers. Although Klansmen bragged openly, no one was held accountable until 2005, when the State indicted Preacher Edgar Ray Killen, an 80-year-old notorious racist. Through exclusive interviews with Killen, the film explores whether the prosecution of one unrepentant Klansman is justice sufficient to erase the stain of the past and promote racial healing.

NOT YOUR TYPICAL BIGFOOT MOVIE - Regional Premiere (62 min. / directed by Jay Delaney)
NOT YOUR TYPICAL BIGFOOT MOVIE provides a look at the trials and triumphs of life in the Appalachian foot hills. Through the experiences of Dallas and Wayne, two amateur Bigfoot researchers in southern Ohio, we see how the power of a dream can bring two men together in friendship and provide hope and meaning that transcend the harsh realities of life in a dying steel town.

PIP & ZASTROW: AN AMERICAN FRIENDSHIP - Tennessee Premiere (75 min. / directed by Karin Hayes, Victoria Bruce)
PIP & ZASTROW: AN AMERICAN FRIENDSHIP is the true story of two men who cross racial boundaries during segregation in the 1940s and form a life-long friendship that takes extraordinary turns. With humor, compassion and heartbreak, Pip and Zastrow navigate through 60 years against the backdrop of the civil rights movement and a country that has yet to overcome deep-seated racism and social inequity.

SONG SUNG BLUE - Regional Premiere (87 min. / directed by Greg Kohs)
SONG SUNG BLUE tells the alternately inspiring and tragic love story of Lightning & Thunder, a homegrown Milwaukee husband and wife singing duo who pay tribute to the music of Neil Diamond. The film goes backstage into the personal lives of this brave couple - from their humble beginnings more than 20 years ago through the most dramatic chapters in the lives of these authentic American dreamers.

THIS IS NOT A ROBBERY - Regional Premiere (70 min. / directed by Lucas Jansen, Adam Kurland)
Filmed on location all across the American south, THIS IS NOT A ROBBERY tells the legend of Red Rountree - one of America's last great folk heroes. Using material collected during Red's last interview, taken in prison months before his death, as well as stories from those who knew him before he turned outlaw and those who knew him as a notorious criminal, the film chronicles both Red's career as a bank robber and the long and strange life that led him to it.

THROW DOWN YOUR HEART - Memphis Premiere (70 min. / directed by Sascha Paladino)
THROW DOWN YOUR HEART follows American banjo virtuoso Bela Fleck on his journey to Africa to explore the little known African roots of the banjo and record an album. Bela's boundary-breaking musical adventure takes him to Uganda, Tanzania, The Gambia, and Mali, and provides a glimpse of the beauty and complexity of Africa. Using his banjo, Bela transcends barriers of language and culture, finding common ground and forging connections with musicians from very different backgrounds.

Jimi Jamison to Release New Album "Crossroads Moment"
09-19-2008

Lovers of great Melodic Rock, it is truly time to rejoice! On November 7th 2008 Frontiers Records will release Jimi Jamison's brand new album "Crossroads Moment".

This is Jimi's first recording since his swan song as lead singer with Survivor on their 2006 release "Reach". Even upon first listen it is apparent that something almost indefinable has changed since that record. The music is more melodic and rocking than ever before harkening back to those magic days of "Vital Signs", "When Seconds Count" and "Too Hot To Sleep". Perhaps the magic ingredient here is the addition of Jamison's former Survivor bandmate Jim Peterik, who is back in the role as co-producer and songwriter. To that blend, add a Jamison more determined than ever to regain his rightful place in the echelons of great rock lead singers.

"I feel I have something to prove with this record. It is my chance to say that I am back with a vengeance ready to rock harder than ever. I think my new passion can be heard on every cut. Singing those great Peterik melodies and lyrics felt like coming home", says Jimi

From humble beginnings in rural Mississippi to established superstar in Memphis, Tennessee, his achievements call to mind the other Memphis Rock and Roll Legend, whom Jimi met as a young boy while Elvis was on one of his famous shopping sprees. Like Elvis, Jimi has never forgotten from whence he came, and continues to be dedicated to benefits assisting St. Jude Children`s Hospital, The Special Olympics and the ARF Foundation, with Tony LaRussa of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Beginning with the nationally acclaimed band Target in the 1970's, Jimi continued his rise to stardom with Cobra through the early 1980`s. In 1983, he joined Survivor as the group was to go on to enjoy five singles in the Top Ten, four gold, and double platinum albums and multiple movie soundtracks. His renditions of "Eye of the Tiger" from Rocky and "Burning Heart" from Rocky IV thrill concert audiences to this day.

"Crossroads Moments" was recorded between February and July of '08 at Jim Peterik's World Stage Studios near Chicago. Behind the board is longtime Peterik collaborator Larry Millas (Pride of Lions, World Stage, Ides of March) in the capacity of co-producer and engineer. "My main goal with this record was to keep it focused to what the fans want the most - that means strong beats, inspiring lyrics and soaring melodies. I feel Jimi really hit his stride vocally as well", said Jim Peterik.

FIVE-STAR DRUM SHOPS START ‘THE BIG BEAT’ FOR CHARITY

The sound of drums will rumble across North America on Sunday, November 2 as ten Five-Star member drum shops launch The Big Beat, to bring together the largest gathering of drummers ever assembled, celebrate the joy of drumming and raise money for worthwhile causes. Not only will each location try to break the Guinness world record for the most drummers playing the same beat at one time (previously set by Donn Bennett Drum Studio, with 533), but the participants will also try to set a record for drummers in all cities playing simultaneously!

Patterned after similar events that have been held by Five-Star members in Seattle, Tulsa and Houston, The Big Beat is the first attempt to coordinate efforts on a large scale, with the hope of expanding each year, until drummers across the globe are locked in on one worldwide groove.

Donn Bennett, owner of Donn Bennett Drum Studio in suburban Seattle and a co-founder of Woodstick, the seminal such Big Beat-type event that has been held for five years explains,

“What started out as a lark has grown into the single most dynamic demonstration of the power of drums and drummers in our community, making this event the focal point of the Northwest drumming world.”

Donna Fisher, President of The Percussion Center in Houston, produced a Big Beat event for the first time in 2007 and called it “an awesome experience.” She elaborated, “The energy of having all those drummers gathered in one place playing simultaneously is something that's hard to describe. What could be better than having fun and making a difference at the same time?”

Top Big Beat pledge-raisers in each city will be awarded prizes donated by the biggest names in the drum industry and there will be a raffle at all locations, with the national winner getting an authentic Ringo Starr signature on a replica Beatles logo bass drum head!

Drummers of all skill levels and experience are encouraged to get involved and contact one of these participating Five-Star members for details:

Buffalo Drum Outlet - Depew, NY
Columbus Percussion - Columbus, OH
Donn Bennett Drum Studio - Bellevue, WA
Drum World - Tulsa, OK
Just Drums - Toronto, ON
Memphis Drum Shop - Memphis, TN
The Percussion Center - Houston, TX
Resurrection Drums - Hollywood, FL
Stebal Drums - Willowick, OH

Big Beat events across the country will benefit the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation and in some cities, the addition of a local charity as well. Founded in 1996, MHOF donates new and refurbished musical instruments to underserved schools, community music programs and individual students nationwide, in an effort to give youngsters the many benefits of music education, help them to be better students and inspire creativity and expression through playing music. Since its inception, MHOF programs have benefited more than 500,000 students and have enabled hundreds of dedicated teachers to provide a better learning experience in school.

VOICEOVER GUY SCORES TWO TELLY AWARDS
09-08-2008

..most of us voiceover folks do our work behind the scenes without expectation of kudos or kind words apart from a paycheck that doesn't bounce.
...so it came as a pleasant surprise to learn that the film "Kodiak Reserve: Home of the Great Kodiak Bear" I did a few months back for the folks at U.S.Fish & Wildlife won a Silver Telly in the Nature category and a Certificate of Excellence, both tops in their categories.
...right now I'm working on the narration for a two-hour PBS film, "Paving The Way," which is due for release this Spring. Produced by Depth of Field out of St. Louis, the documentary details the adventures of automotive pioneers who drove their Model A cars 5,000 miles over a 76-day trek, the first to circumnavigate all the great Western Parks. It's a great companion piece to Ken Burn's upcoming film on the creation of the national Interstate system. Look for it.
...and with the sad passing of Don LaFontaine, it's my duty (self-serving though it may be) to remind you that film trailers are also part of what I do for a living.

...keep 'em cranking!
